SPC 1017 Professor Sinkoff
November 15, 2022
Hello, I'm Mya Torres and this is my blog. Currently, this is our second blog and so far the class has been very enjoyable. I think my classmates put in the work in their projects, which is keeping this class interesting. They really bring it when it comes to having a very aesthetically pleasing PowerPoint. I also find that the professor does an amazing job of keeping us engaged with interesting project ideas. The project ideas for this time were racial divide & Economy, Education & Health Care, and Immigration & law and order. I actually found my topic very interesting and was happy with how everything came out. I think that everyone outdid themselves by having good information but also not bombarding people either. I find that writing my information out on my notes app helps with what points I need to touch on and just how my delivery of said topic should go. Especially since I have a tendency to stumble on my words so seeing those words in front of me can give me a good pacing guide. I find this class to be more fun than anything since I'm already okay with speaking on topics with strangers since at my job I do a lot of educating on proper care for pets. In that sense sometimes I have to essentially give a speech filled with facts on why things should be a certain way. Now group one had a tough topic that I actually think they executed well.
Group one's topic was education & health care. In this topic, they discussed what is healthcare which is the field of concern or restoration of the health of the body or mind. They also went through the different types of healthcare Beveridge, Bismarck, National Health Insurance Model, and Out of the pocket model. Their interview was good they talked to an ICU nurse which is a really smart choice, especially considering nurses are like the heart of medicine. What that interview also brought to the table that I liked is elections play a big role in helping people get the help they need like insurance. It then goes deeper into how voting helps since it can put people with the ideals of helping get there. If people don't vote then the people who actually do could be putting people in place that can care less and rather keep it the way it's been for a while. Personally, I think change is the best thing and there are many overall improvements. They also gave good organizations to help people who can't vote. I think it's interesting how many people can't vote because of various reasons group one also made sure to put in their PowerPoint.
Group two's topic was the Racial divide & Economy. They started off strong with the brochure showing how the divide is still a big thing. They kept their presentation pretty light by having four main topics. One downside is I found it hard to stay focused since they had so many words. I think they could've just said all their info without having so much written down. I feel like a good presentation has fewer words and more pictures for the audience but yet the speaker still has all the info. I like how they went on to compare the Us versus the world economy. What I found interesting is that with a bad local economy the voter turnout is a lot less which isn't surprising to me. Personally, I've experienced that with my own family members who needed to focus on making money to pay the bills rather than go out of their way to vote when it's not an instant benefit. In the long run, a good candidate can go the right way but without the voter turnout, they have nothing. Organizations that revolve around economics got brought up like the American economic association, World economics association, and National Association for business economics. They finally lead into the racial divide, which again starts with history and is divided into the same topics. I feel as if they could've pieced it together since economics and the racial divide go hand and hand. Instead of separating the two into almost different presentations. I like how they also gave info on the senate candidates and their platform. Since many people don't keep up with politics enough to get the full picture of candidates. It looks like they didn't do an interview which might be of a lack of enough group members like my own.
Group three was my own group and we did Immigration and law & order. It was a pretty interesting topic, my group and I did a great job at trying to figure out topics for everyone to do that were fair. I do have to say though it was draining having to help my group leader because most of our group was/is pretty inactive. Yes, they do their assigned part with no problem but they weren't giving their opinion which could've maybe led them to an even better topic. Our group also I believe being the smallest was a big disadvantage to us as I tried to get someone to volunteer to do an interview but no one was ready for that since they started their respective topics already. The good thing is professor was very sweet and understanding granting us the okay to not have an interview but of course, needed to make sure our project was good to make up for it. Besides all the setbacks I think we were on par with having a good project like she expected of us. I think my group compared to the first project has really made a turnaround and hopefully, we can have way better communication next project.
In conclusion, I think overall everyone did their best and put a lot of effort into their projects. While there's always room for improvement since we all have different opinions. I think personally that what makes a class like this so entertaining is people's criticism but also learning whether it be solely about the topic or maybe tips on how to be a better speaker. For instance, I'm pretty camera shy so putting on the camera is the hardest part for me but after the first presentation, I realized it wasn't bad. I feel as if the presentations slowly but surely build up our confidence as some people who presented seemed better at pacing and confidence in tone compared to presentation one. I can't wait to see what the next presentation will bring in the information, group overall opinions, facts, and confidence of the presenters in their information.
