Mya Torres

SPC 1017 Professor Sinkoff

September 23, 2022

Hello class, my name is Mya Torres. I'm graduating Miami Dade College this semester and I want to share my thought process on the first presentation we did. I think the way the class is done is very interesting and works well for me. Especially since the due dates give me a great deal of time to get my assignments done in a timely manner (Especially with my work schedule). The way we're all divided into three groups I really like since initially thought it would be individual for everything. Each groups were assigned a different chapter my group ( group three ) was assigned chapter ten. The other groups one and two were assigned chapter three and chapter nine. Unlike maybe other groups mine had issues on how to separate  the workload amongst ourselves. Which is a big deal is this class since we have to work together to make sure our presentation comes out consistent. One big plus though of the group format I found is it's less of a workload than for instance doing the whole presentation yourself. I appreciate how professor Sinkoff grades based on individual input on slides instead of by group. The first group I will be talking about is group one.

Group one was the first to present and had the least amount of time to prepare beforehand. Having no clue if professor Sinkoff was a tough grader and still did a good job presenting. I think everyone took their time and didn't rush through their slides. I feel though as if they wrote too much on the slides and probably could've had more visuals. Overall though they seem really prepared for their topic even with having less time to complete to my group for instance. I hope to see them add more visuals in the future and keep the same pacing. The topic group one had was intercultural communication. One part they brought up that I think that might've been a surprise to see covered was code switching. It is something really common that a lot of people do especially for instance going from family to let's say a friend. Typically, the way we talk is more "proper" with our parents, while with friends were more lax and can say things we wouldn't. I really like the video the person used for it since it couldn't have explained it even better. They also lightly went on the topics of sexual orientation, gender, and ethnicity. They touched on masculinity and femininity; especially how important it is to know the clients background so you have a better understanding on how they think. Group two is the next group.

Group two's presentation also went smoothly. I think though they had even more words than group one. I feel like the slides were very word heavy and should've had way more visuals. I do think though the slides still looked nice and uniform as a group. It could've had more of a pop though it kind of was boring to stare at a very monotone slide. They did though space themselves very well and were detailed with their information. I think overall they did a good job but not over group one based on visuals and amount of words per slide. They were going over chapter nine which is communication in groups. One of the examples they bring up is types of groups which kind of goes along with group one since the type of group influences what you want to say. Basically to keep from "rocking the boat" between the people in said group. They also name the four different types of groups which are Protective, Consensual, Laissez-faire, and Pluralistic. Support and social groups are brought up as well, they have a pretty distinct difference. Social groups are usually ur friends and peers that you hang around with. Support groups on the other hand are mainly made to express feelings that may be building up and give other perspectives of people who understand. Last by not least my group. Not the most organized group but definitely got the memo.

Group three's presentation is my groups. I have to say we had a pretty rough start by not knowing how to split the workload between each other. Also we were lost on what exactly to do visual wise was it just pictures or did it need a bit of everything. Though we did end up getting on the same page after some time and getting our parts finished. I think next presentation we will be a lot better. My reasoning behind that is we didn't use the right amount of spacing between each other. I feel like we should've taken two to three minutes per. I have an idea to help with that which is to try and record ourselves then cut  the parts that was extra. I think that was our biggest flaw but in the end we really made it work. We had visuals in all our slides and kept words to a small amount. The main issue I'd say I had within my group was when my first slides were lost. I was mad because it took me time , redoing them was a very annoying process and I hope to not do it again for any of our future projects.

The conclusion to this blog is that overall I think my class including the leaders have done a   great job so far. I think personally it can only get better from here we just need that commitment. I think also with Professor Sinkoff's way of teaching we could really learn because of her active feedback while presenting. I have never had a professor more involved with the class then she is. For the fact she tries to keep everything in check. The chapters interestingly all had connections between each other. So while some people did not I think it is interesting I think it gives us more opportunity to really learn and piece everything together.
